In this groundbreaking guide, elite dog trainer Kyra Sundance reveals the path to helping your dog be a reliable partner and true member of your family. Kyra -- a world-acclaimed Stunt Dog Team performer, nationally ranked dog sports competitor, and movie dog trainer -- holds the human-dog bond at the heart of her training method. She cares for her dogs with tenderness, trains them thoroughly, and inspires them to excel.

If you're battling the same problems with your dog over and over, then the training method you're using isn't working. Instead of more training, what's needed is better training. Kyra's "whole-dog" approach looks beyond sterile training methods that manipulate through reward and punishment and instead advocates humane behavior modification techniques to establish expectations without compromising love. Her principles -- such as "One Command, One Consequence," "Focus on the Solution, Not the Problem" and "Praise, Touch, Treat -- in That Order" -- empower readers with a clear strategy and the tools to enact real change.

Kyra's method does not suppress natural behaviors and teach subservience. Instead, it fosters confident, happy dogs who are motivated to do the right thing rather than fearful of making a mistake. The Dog Rules shows us us how to develop joyful relationships with dogs who balance enthusiasm and self-control.

Dog Rules Review2009-09-184 / 5
I found the book ok. It talked alot about the authors experiences but not as much actually hands on information
Entertaining, Informative & Easy to Read2009-08-055 / 5
I have purchased many books on dog training - which were good, however this book actually provides a lot more user friendly insight on the dogs behavior. I also liked that Kyra balances the pack leader mentality with the human aspect. It's not one aspect or the other - it's nicely combined.
The title says it all2009-07-175 / 5
She knows her business and has an approach that builds intimacy and companionship as well as "good" behavior. The key of course is that what is good and acceptable to me may not be good or acceptable to you. She shows you how to make conscious choices about your dog's behavior rather then just "seeing what develops."
Get your dog to do what you want!2009-06-104 / 5
Kyra Sundance is a nationally ranked dog sports competitor and experienced trainer for dog actors. Her new book, The Dog Rules, instructs dog owners in how the bond between human and dog is a key factor in training any dog and that by maximizing the dog's own instinctual desire for both prey and pleasing its human, any dog can be trained. According to Sundance, dogs don't need more training, they need better training. Using examples from her career as part of an acrobatic stunt dog team and many years training dogs for the movie and film industry, the author demonstrates how to get your dog to do what you want, when you want it to. The Dog Rules is not an obedience 101 book and at times the text is more technical than the average dog owner may wish for. Sundance discusses the psychology of the dog and underlying reasons for why the presented training tools work, educating the reader to become a better dog's friend and keeper. Sometimes the personal stories distract and the science behind the training tips are perhaps deeper than some readers may wish to explore. Following the fourteen rules takes dedication and consistency and in order to achieve behavior changes in the dog, the human may have to make a few changes as well. Overall, this book does impart excellent guidance for training a dog to become a well behaved companion. There are no bad dogs, just dogs that need better training done by dog owners who take responsibility to ensure their animals receive that training. The Dog Rules provides the guidance an interested owner needs with the foundation to know why these tools work. Anyone that applies the rules for training outlined by Kyra Sundance will enrich the bond between human and dog and find that the investment of time and energy will pay off with increased knowledge for how to integrate the dog positively into the family and greater confidence and trust by the dog as part of that family.

Finally a "user friendly" training book2009-04-195 / 5
I've read many dog training books and most are so full of technical language about psychology and training techniques that I've had to re-read parts if not all a second time. This book is thorough but is easy to read and full of real life examples. Kyra even reveals how she has dealt with problems she's had with Chalcey's training. But, most importantly, she reminds you that training is ongoing throughout your dog's life and patience and consistency are crucial in developing a solid working relationship with your pet. This book is the layman's manual that you will refer back to many, many times as you work with your dog.
